Being an eighth-generation Texan, I have more than my share of right-wing rednecks in my family. Family reunions are always entertaining and are always good for several right-wing political conversations concerning “fags,” “my guns,” “baby killin’,” and other issues of world importance.

These ideas are tossed about by people who routinely show up to wars of words minus ammunition, and to gunfights armed with a knife. Fags? Really? That doesn’t sound very godlike, or anywhere near the preachings of Jesus Christ. Like my dear uncle stated, “If those folks really want to be miserable like the rest of us, let them be!”

Guns always seem to be a hot topic with right-wing “Christian” gun-lover redneck folk. I am sure we could split hairs and find one or two guns and types of ammo that have been banned. Anyone who says “them Democrat sons of bitches are going to take my guns” is full of crap. No legitimate hunting rifle or handgun has been banned.

Admittedly, I haven’t done too much research, but I know dozens of avid gun owners, and not one of them has shown me any deer rifle or handgun that has been outlawed during the Obama administration. So, settle down, Bubba. You still have your 50 caliber to go moose hunting with.

Democrats are baby killers! I have heard this absurd statement repeatedly over the years. I sincerely doubt there are too many people in the world who like abortion. In fact, most Democrats I know would probably never have an abortion. However, they are wise enough to know that most unwanted babies will never be adopted. In my opinion, if Republicans really wanted to do anything about abortion, they could have when they controlled all three branches of government.

In closing, I love political discourse between both parties, and will continue to enjoy our family gatherings!

Tracy Joseph Bogert, an eighth-generation Texan, resides in Somerset and is active in the Democratic Party.

In summary: while Tracy's family were enjoying Friday Night Lights, he was out getting a mani/pedi. Clearly his family is more tolerant than he, they still invite him to reunions.
