Morales gets ‘shock’ probation
Judge Donna Rayes has sentenced the driver responsible for the death of a 34-year-old Stockdale man in a 2010 crash on F.M. 1681 to 10 years in a state prison in an arrangement once known as “shock probation.” Court records from June 11 indicate that Marco Morales, now 26, will spend 180 days in a state prison before returning to Wilson County to face a judge.
At that time, a judge could decide to allow Morales to serve the rest of his sentence on probation, said Assistant District Attorney Audrey Louis of the 81st Judicial District. This would include treatment at a Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility for up to 12 months, she said.
Morales pled guilty April 18 to intoxication manslaughter in the Nov. 29, 2010, death of his cousin, Luke Gonzales. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, Gonzales was one of three passengers in Morales’ 1998 Dodge pickup truck at 1:40 a.m. that day when the truck was involved in a single-vehicle rollover near the Gonzales County line.
No one else was injured in the crash.
District court also convened June 13. Among those appearing that day were:
•Jordan Lewis, 19, was present for a pretrial hearing. He is charged in two separate incidents -- one a Nov. 7, 2011, burglary and the other an alleged March 3 escape from the Wilson County Jail and subsequent carjacking. Lewis is set to return to court July 17 for a docket call, with jury selection in his trial set to begin July 30.
•Ramon Lopez, 26, was in court for a docket call. He is charged with murder in the June 6, 2011, stabbing death of 57-year-old Jose Antonio Hernandez. The docket call was rescheduled to July 17, with jury selection in Lopez’s trial set to begin July 30.
•Adrian Benavides, 29, was in court for a docket call. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle for his alleged role in a March 14, 2011, incident in Floresville. Jury selection in Benavides’ trial is set to begin June 19.
•Steven Edward Cole, 50, was present for a docket call. Cole is charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant for his alleged role in a Jan. 15, 2011, shootout north of Floresville. The docket call was rescheduled to Aug. 15, with jury selection in Cole’s trial set to begin Aug. 27.
