Herminia ‘Minnie’ Gonzales Peña
Herminia “Minnie” Gonzales Peña, a lifelong resident of Wilson County, Texas, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at 11:20 p.m. in the Floresville Nursing Center in Floresville, at the age of 84 years, 3 months, and 2 days. Minnie was born March 13, 1928, in Floresville, the daughter of José Angel and Maria Marmalejo Gonzales.
Minnie married Ben J. Peña on Feb. 10, 1946, in the El Mesias United Methodist Church in Floresville. She was a lifelong member of the church, where she was actively involved with the United Methodist Women for many years. Minnie began volunteering with the EODC (Head Start) child-care services at El Mesias United Methodist Church years ago, and was then offered a position where she continued working for 19 years.
Minnie was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Fernando Gonzales and Frank Gonzales; her sister, Emilia Gonzales Tejeda; and her nephew, Joe Tony Gonzales Sr.
Minnie is survived by her beloved husband of more than 66 years, Ben J. Peña of Floresville; her children, Benedict G. Peña and wife Yolanda of San Antonio, Roberto “Bobby” G. Peña Sr. and wife Olga of Floresville, Richard G. Peña and wife Debra of Poth, and Rachel Bonnie Peña and husband René of Floresville; her grandchildren, Elena Nohem’ Chinn, Benito Adán Peña, Roberto Peña Jr., Michael Anthony Peña, Ryan Keith Henderson, Timothy Ross Peña, René Angel Peña, and Shayleen Lopez; her six great-grandchildren, Alex, Andrew, and Joshua Chinn; Gideon and Ezra Henderson; and Cassidey Peña; her sister and brother, Maria “Mae” Guerra and Fidel Gonzales Sr. and wife Mary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation was held Monday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m., and a prayer service followed at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the El Mesias United Methodist Church in Floresville, officiated by the Rev. Francisco Javier Briones.
Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.
Serving as pallbearers were Minnie’s grandsons, Roberto Peña Jr., Michael Anthony Peña, Ryan Keith Henderson, Benito Adán Peña, René Angel Peña, and Timothy Ross Peña.
