The Fortnight for Freedom, June 21 through July 4, proclaimed by the Catholic U.S. bishops as a time of prayer, study, catechesis, and witness of Freedom of Religion, continues in the Archdiocese of San Antonio with a televised interfaith prayer service to celebrate religious freedom.

On Tuesday, June 26th, at 10 a.m., Bishop Oscar Cantú will host representatives of the San Antonio interfaith community at the Archdiocese Pastoral Center (Chancery), 2718 West Woodlawn Ave.Joining together in prayer will be representatives of the Catholic, Protestant, BaHá’i, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh faith traditions.Music will be led by Mr. David Kauffman of Good for the Soul Music. The service will be broadcast live on Catholic Television of San Antonio, Time Warner Channel15,and then rebroadcast several times throughout the week. Because of the small size of the Pastoral Center atrium where the service will take place, this event will not be open to the public. We encourage people to watch on CTSA.

The archdiocese’s month-long focus on religious freedom will come to its climax on Sunday, July 1st, when pastors will be asked to read a letter to their parishioners from Archbishop Gustavo Garc’a-Siller at their weekend Mass. His letter challenges each individual to work to preserve and protect the religious liberties of all.In addition attendees will be asked to pray for the preservation of religious freedom. The weekend is being called “Let Freedom Ring”. Catholic churches throughout the archdiocese will ring their church bells for freedom at 12 Noon on Sunday.

The Fortnight for Freedom was declared by the bishops of the United States in order to call Catholics and all people of faith to a greater realization of the erosion to religious freedom in the in this country and around the world. It is part of the U.S. bishops’ ongoing challenge to the Mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services that will force religious institutions to provide insurance coverage for practices that would violate their religious beliefs. The bishops have also voiced concern of a much broader weakening of Freedom of Religion in areas in which faith-based ministry is threatened in a number of areas. These issues are outlined in their document, Our First, Most Cherished Freedom.

More information on this month focused on Freedom of Religion can be found at the archdiocesan website, www.archsa.org/freedomofreligion.
