Editorial: A response to Mayor Tejada

Floresville Mayor Daniel Tejada wrote on his Facebook page, “It is difficult for me to understand the ideology of this radical movement,” referring to the Wilson County Patriots aka Wilson County Tea Party.

May I offer some clarification about the mission of the Wilson County Patriots by sharing that mission with you?

We are a nonpartisan neighborhood group organization. We are dedicated to education and advocacy of strict adherence to the Constitution, rule of law, limited government, and sound fiscal policies. We strongly support free enterprise and protection of individual rights and liberties while promoting personal responsibility, morality, and religious expression.

Wilson County is our home, and although not all of us live in Floresville, we patronize the Floresville businesses and rely on their services.

The accusation by the mayor that “The Wilson County Tea Party has taken on a new fight -- the youth of the Floresville Area” is just not supported by the facts. The facts are as follows:

•April 26, 2012, Floresville City Council meeting -- several citizens, including George Rodriguez, expressed concerns over the ambiguity of the sports complex project and potential impact on the taxpayer. Monica Flores, FEDC board member, said she had been told over and over there was not going to be a sports complex. She attributed some of the confusion to a lack of communication. She also verified that the obligation for payment of the bond for Alamo Colleges had not been met. Philip Vipond, Floresville Chamber of Commerce president, did not support the sports complex. Cindi Cranston emphasized they are spending the taxpayers’ money (we will all pay the sales-tax increase on goods) and to not rush into this. Two city council members do not favor building a sports complex. The mayor agreed to form a committee to review options. Jim Miller and several others volunteered to be on the committee. The mayor did not follow through.

Once again, no specific plan was presented by the city. The ambiguity continues, at the taxpayers’ expense. Present at a city council meeting were San Antonio families interested in utilizing the sports complex for midget car racing. Which baseball or soccer field were they going to use for this?

•May 24, 2012, City Council meeting -- Mr. Spencer, Heartland Recreation, provided a presentation to renovate our current city park. He suggested a splash pad, bike trails, and a “pay for play” park. He emphasized the city must have a financial plan and put a budget together for the required maintenance and staffing.

So we have gone from no sports complex, to a sports complex, to a citizens’ committee that did not materialize, to renovating our current city park, and now back to the sports complex. Unbelievably, the mayor still has not addressed a budget or presented a plan.

How is asking for accountability of expenditures “radical”?

The inaccurate comments from the mayor about the Wilson County Patriots are clearly not based on fact. I urge you to verify the city council proceedings by viewing them on YouTube. God bless our city and our country.
