FLORESVILLE -- John Allen Baker, who in September celebrated his 100th win as coach of the Floresville Tigers football team, is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated. The charge stems from a June 17 arrest on U.S. 181 here.
Trooper Al Alejos of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol said he arrested the 49-year-old Baker at 1:12 a.m. June 17 and transported him to the Wilson County Jail. There, records indicate he posted $2,000 bond.
In a statement, Floresville Independent School District (ISD) Superintendent Jerry Lee Hunkapiller said Baker was placed on paid leave when the district became aware of the arrest. Hunkapiller said athletic director duties will be split between Floresville High School Assistant Principal Mike Schroller and himself. Coach Jeff Luna will serve as interim head football coach.
The Floresville ISD board of trustees considered possible termination of Baker’s contract during a lengthy closed session at a June 21 special meeting. When they reconvened, the board voted to authorize “the superintendent and legal counsel to proceed as discussed in closed session.”
Hunkapiller said he could not comment further on Baker’s situation.
According to Baker’s biography on the Floresville ISD athletics website, he became head coach at Floresville High School in 2006, after coaching stints at various high schools, including Poth and Stockdale. This is his second stint in Floresville, which is where he began his career in 1985.

Dont know Baker, but it does seem like you never hear about certain things. What was the outcome of the student/coach relationship? I know the FISD police did the investigation, but would be nice to know what she found out. Im sure if she was a real investigator, she would have found out that other coaches knew what went on and maybe even some teacher and did or said nothing about it. When you never hear anything else of it, makes it look like it was swept under the rug. I dont wish any bad luck on Baker, but from a football fan point of view, time for him to go. Floresville has had too many losing seasons under his lead. The secretary should have been fired for stealing money. Why let someone resign when they commit an offense like that? Fire them so folks will know the type of person she is. Plus she got full benefits? Unbelieveable. They must be part of the Mayor and some of his council members if this goes on.

Yes, but at what cost? This board picks and chooses the people in which they want to be removed by the public and those that they do not. The secretary should of been investigated by an agency and there were witnesses, but they are part of the social work office so who would believe them. The student/coach relationship had been ongoing for more than a year--sound familar? Penn State ring a bell?
As for other situations it is common procedure for districts to allow faculty member to resign their contract to avoid public removal the result is the same, they have been told you are no longer employed here.

Not a big deal that he got stopped for DWI. Don't you all remember the middle school assitant principal that was under the "command" of his wife, was arrested for DWI and PI and the board did absolutely nothing about it. There is plenty this board has not done anything about, so why target coach baker? The last director of personnel had a secretary that was stealing from the social work office and he made sure she retired with full benefits and that was swept under the rug, he knew she was stealing, she was caught by the social worker and some parents. Then the director also swept the student/coach relationship under the rug before he retired and the coach resigned, the girl graduated and the head coach had another job within another school district. Which coincedentially he retired a week prior to the news coming out. This school board is an absolute joke! Again they targeted this coach to make it seem like they are doing something but yet, they have had two to three other incidences that are much bigger than this and did absolutely nothing.
So baker's personal life is now out in the news because this board decided now was a time to do something instead of sweeping it under the rug, or was it because this is all public information since he was stopped/arrested by a local department and there was no way they could hide it like the others have been hidden.
