FLORESVILLE -- John Allen Baker, who in September celebrated his 100th win as coach of the Floresville Tigers football team, is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated. The charge stems from a June 17 arrest on U.S. 181 here.

Trooper Al Alejos of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol said he arrested the 49-year-old Baker at 1:12 a.m. June 17 and transported him to the Wilson County Jail. There, records indicate he posted $2,000 bond.

In a statement, Floresville Independent School District (ISD) Superintendent Jerry Lee Hunkapiller said Baker was placed on paid leave when the district became aware of the arrest. Hunkapiller said athletic director duties will be split between Floresville High School Assistant Principal Mike Schroller and himself. Coach Jeff Luna will serve as interim head football coach.

The Floresville ISD board of trustees considered possible termination of Baker’s contract during a lengthy closed session at a June 21 special meeting. When they reconvened, the board voted to authorize “the superintendent and legal counsel to proceed as discussed in closed session.”

Hunkapiller said he could not comment further on Baker’s situation.

According to Baker’s biography on the Floresville ISD athletics website, he became head coach at Floresville High School in 2006, after coaching stints at various high schools, including Poth and Stockdale. This is his second stint in Floresville, which is where he began his career in 1985.
