Chester “Check” Pawelek had a big surprise when he showed up at the bus stop earlier this month for a gambling trip to Kinder, La., to mark his eighth decade of life.

Accompanying him to the bus stop were his wife, Elaine; his son, Kenneth, and wife Barbara; his daughter, Mary; and a granddaughter, Lynette.

To Pawelek’s surprise as he boarded the bus, he was joined by some of his brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben and Marie and Archie and Gladys, residents of Floresville; Wilbert Pawelek of Falls City, Dorothy Pawelek of San Antonio, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Those joining him donned bright green shirts emblazoned “Cha-ching! Chester hit the big one.”

He had a trip to remember as he celebrated his 80th birthday!
