Making an impact
Youth with the First Baptist Church of La Vernia’s Impact Missions group work on the home of Luci Roser during a recent mission project to put into practice God’s call to serve others. A total of 30 high school and junior high students and 10 adults participated in the project.
Impact Missions is a missions ministry of First Baptist Church of La Vernia. Impact Missions exists to show people the love of God by being the hands and feet of Jesus through service projects and opportunities to take the Gospel to unreached people.
This has been a busy year for Impact Missions. Along with taking a team to Asia in January, they recently completed a weeklong mission project in the La Vernia area. This is the third year for Impact to perform a local mission project.
The project this year took place at the home of Luci Roser. Luci had many needs around her home that we were able to take on as a weeklong project. Thirty junior high and high school students from La Vernia and Floresville participated in the project, along with about 10 adults who helped oversee the work being done. Home Depot provided a $5,000 Community Impact Grant, which helped to purchase the tools and materials needed to do the job.
This project involved large amounts of landscaping, demolition, new construction, and painting on the home. The 3 acres of land that Luci lives on were cleaned. The project involved clearing underbrush, mowing, weed eating, extensive trimming of dozens of trees, and cutting down dead trees. Flowerbeds were created around the house, as well as a new walkway leading to the largest new flowerbed, equipped with a new birdbath. A severely water-damaged add-on room was torn down and turned back into a beautiful porch with ceiling fans and views of the newly landscaped back yard. Old exterior wood was removed, replaced, and painted. The boarded-up garage was given new life and better functionality with a new garage door and painted trim. All salvageable wood and windows from the home were donated to Habitat for Humanity.
Luci’s house was a great success. The participants worked each day from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Following the daily work were socials in the homes of various church members for dinner and swimming. On Thursday, the group worked until 5 p.m. and ended the day with worship and fajitas from the grill, celebrating with the homeowner.
Many businesses in the community helped with the project, providing free meals and water for our workers. Impact Missions would like to thank H-E-B, Sammy’s Mexican Restaurant, Busy Bear Restaurant, SYSCO, and Home Depot for making the project a success.
First Baptist Church of La Vernia is so thankful to have a community that cares about the people who live here. We look forward to having many more Impact Missions projects in the future to make our town and community an even greater place to live.
