Virginia G. Cortez passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Floresville, Texas, at the age of 97 years, 4 months, and 26 days. A resident of Floresville for the past five years, Virginia was a native of Seguin and formerly of Hereford. She was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Seguin, the daughter of Librado Gonzales and Guadalupe Zamaripa.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jose Cortez and Fermin Avila; her sons, Celestino and Julian Cortez; her parents; seven brothers; and three sisters.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Lucia Hill of Hereford and Alberta Montoya of Floresville; her son, Frank Avila of Amarillo; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 27, at 5 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, with the Rev. Phil Henning as celebrant.

Interment followed in the Cañada Verde Cemetery in Wilson County.

Serving as pallbearers were Esteban Montoya, Fermin Montoya, Randy Garcia, Esteban Cortez, David Cortez, and Vincent Cortez.
