The 81st Judicial District Attorney’s office, which includes Frio, La Salle, Atascosa, Karnes and Wilson Counties, is accepting resumes for an Assistant District Attorney position. The selected candidate will manage a specialized caseload with a focus on criminal enterprise, human trafficking/human smuggling and other cases as needed. Responsibilities of the position include working closely with Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies, felony intake, preparation of cases for grand jury, negotiating pleas, and representation of the State of Texas in pretrial proceedings, as well as in criminal bench trials and jury trials in District Court. All applicants must be a graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law by the State of Texas and have a minimum of five (5) years prosecutorial experience with felony cases and extensive trial experience. Salary commensurate with experience. Resumes will be accepted through the close of business October 19, 2015. Virginia G. Cortez passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Floresville, Texas, at the age of 97 years, 4 months, and 26 days. A resident of Floresville for the past five years, Virginia was a native of Seguin and formerly of Hereford. She was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Seguin, the daughter of Librado Gonzales and Guadalupe Zamaripa.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jose Cortez and Fermin Avila; her sons, Celestino and Julian Cortez; her parents; seven brothers; and three sisters.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Lucia Hill of Hereford and Alberta Montoya of Floresville; her son, Frank Avila of Amarillo; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 27, at 5 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, with the Rev. Phil Henning as celebrant.

Interment followed in the Cañada Verde Cemetery in Wilson County.

Serving as pallbearers were Esteban Montoya, Fermin Montoya, Randy Garcia, Esteban Cortez, David Cortez, and Vincent Cortez.
