Tornado confirmed in May 10 storm
KOSCIUSKO -- The National Weather Service has confirmed the microburst storm that crossed Wilson County May 10 did contain a small tornado.
According to Paul Yura, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, it was determined a small tornado touched down east of S.H. 123, near Pruski Service Station in Kosciusko. This was after a National Weather Service survey was completed. Yura said June 22 he could not confirm the damage to the business was caused by a tornado, however.
“Wind damage between Poth and S.H. 123 was likely the result of strong thunderstorm winds called a microburst,” Yura said. “As the storm moved east of S.H. 123, there was enough evidence on C.R. 252 to say that damage seen along C.R. 252 was probably the result of a small tornado, an EF0-rated tornado with winds of 65-85 mph.
“It was hard to estimate the path length, due to the isolated damage,” Yura said, “but best guess puts the path at 1/4-mile and the tornado width at 10 yards.”
Yura extended his thanks to Coordinator LeAnn Hosek of the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency, for giving the National Weather Service specific locations and pictures of the storm damage within the county.
