Crash claims life of 29-year-old man
FALLS CITY -- Oil-field laborer Corey Wayne Meeks, 29, is dead following a July 7 crash on U.S. 181 approximately 4 miles north of here.
According to Sgt. J. Ryan Christian of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol, the preliminary investigation by DPS Trooper Harold Estep revealed that at 2:19 a.m., Meeks was driving southbound on U.S. 181 in a 1995 GMC Sierra pickup truck. For reasons yet unknown, Meeks’ vehicle crossed the centerline into the northbound lanes, where it struck the rear axle of a flatbed semi trailer being hauled by a 2008 Mack semi tractor.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Arnold Alexander of Elmendorf, was not injured, Christian said. Meeks, however, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:22 a.m. by Wilson County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Johnny T. Villarreal.
Christian said crashes ending in fatality are on the rise in his sergeant area, which includes Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad counties. Since Jan. 1, he said Wilson County has had nine such crashes. Karnes County has had seven, while Goliad County has had one.
