Heritage Days Youth Rodeo, team-roping results
Heritage Days Youth Rodeo winners — Allora Leonard, Tyla McDonald, Kylie Mask, Tyler Loggins, Carrol Abendroth, Clara Jenschke, Sunnie Cate McCormick, and Katlyn Carter
“Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys,” a song by Waylon Jennings, must not have played in the homes of the more than 70 youth and 400 roping teams who competed in the youth rodeo and team-roping events held May 12 in Pleasanton.
The Cowboy Fellowship of Atascosa County sponsored these two events, along with a ranch rodeo, during its ninth anniversary of the building of the church. Activities took place at the new covered facility on the church grounds.
Carrol Abendroth was the winner of a two-horse trailer, donated by Ranchscapes in Pleasanton.
According to organizers, 70 boys and girls competed in one or more of the seven events. The names of the champions were put in a drawing, with Carrol’s name being drawn.
The top two all-around “cowkids” in four age groups were awarded belt buckles, while those finishing in third through sixth place received tack for their efforts.
The following earned belt buckles in their respective categories:
•Novice, age 7 and under: Allora Leonard, champion; Tyla McDonald, reserve champion
•PeeWee, ages 8-10: Kylie Mask, champion; Tyler Loggins, reserve champion
•Junior, ages 11-13: Carrol Abendroth, champion; Clara Jenschke, reserve champion
•Senior, ages 14-18: Sunnie Cate McCormick, champion; Katlyn Carter, reserve champion.
The annual team-roping event, held in honor of the Cowboy Fellowship’s anniversary, drew more than 400 teams competing for belt buckles, boots, jeans, saddles, and $1,000 in prize money.
Producer Cass Ringelstein and his crew were kept busy, and roping continued into the wee hours of the morning for the No. 10 and No. 13 roping events.
AJ Lopez and Dustin Powell rode away with fully tooled custom saddles for being named the high-point header and heeler in the No. 10.
Other winners in the No. 10 average were Jimmy Baker and Rene Guerra, second; and Slade Malone and Butch Bode, third.
Winners in the No. 10 round were Randall Gaydos and Bubba Jahns, first; and Clint Tieken and Ricky Gonzales, second.
Corey Blaschke and Randy Silguero were awarded Bob Berg belt buckles for placing first in the average in the No. 13 slide.
Other slide average winners were Deno Hayes and Sergio Gonzales, second; Little Joe Arizmendi and Corey Bader, third; and Deno Hayes and Joel Huerta, fourth.
The winning team in the No. 13 slide was that of Joel Rocha and Devin Hayes. Hayes returned to the winners’ circle for second place with partner Dustin Wright.
Bob Berg belt buckles also were awarded to the first- through fifth-place ropers in the No. 10 average round.
Other prizes included Justin Boots to the fastest time in the first round, and $500 each to the high-point header and heeler in the No. 13 round.
