Carolyn Orth, who on March 3 was the victim of a carjacking at the hands of a man who allegedly escaped the Wilson County Jail, will receive $6,000 for her pain and suffering. This is according to a unanimous decision July 23 by the Wilson County Commissioners Court.
Wilson County Attorney Russell Wilson said that the county is not responsible for property damage related to the March 3 incident, in which inmate Jordan Lewis, 28, allegedly brandished a knife when he met Orth outside the Shell gas station on Standish Street before ordering her to drive. When she could not get the vehicle into gear, Lewis allegedly ordered Orth to exit the vehicle. Officials said Lewis then led officers on a high-speed pursuit into Atascosa County, before crashing Orth’s 2008 Ford Escape into a guardrail on I-37, which caused the vehicle to burst into flames.
Lewis was apprehended by troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety as he attempted to flee the burning sport-utility vehicle. He since has been indicted on charges of aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated kidnapping, escape, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and is set to stand trial in September. (See related article, page 9A).
Also during the meeting, commissioners:
•Adopted a resolution for the submission of a Community Development Block Grant application for disaster relief. (See related article, page 3A).
•Voted to hold a public hearing Aug. 27 to gather input on the county’s proposal to relinquish its ownership of a baseball park in Kosciusko.
•Voted to hold a public hearing Sept. 10 related to a takings impact assessment related to enforcing flood-plain rules for recreational- vehicle parks located within the city of Floresville’s extraterritorial jurisdiction.
•Voted to approve an interlocal agreement with the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) related to a $13,300 grant for a recycling trailer.
•Voted to approve an interlocal agreement with AACOG related to a $25,000 grant to fund a household hazardous waste- and tire-collection event. The event, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, is set to be held in the La Vernia area.

Are you people serious? This lady was sitting at a convenience store minding her own business when a "trustee" from the jail, who was not being supervised, escaped from the jail, had a steak knife with him, took his jail shirt off & hiked across the open lot to the convenience store. He hops into HER car & tells her to take off. Luckily she had the presence of mind to get out of the car & let the idiot go. A chase insued with her car being crashed and burned. HER insurance company had to pay for it. I highly suggest you get your story straight before you start commenting. Her being a retired county treasurer had nothing to do with it. If it would have been me I can guarantee you that the county would have been paying me more than $6,000.
Come on! If the same thing were to happen to me would the county pay me $6,000? It is not what you know, it's who you know. No wonder, she is the retired county treasurer. Shame on her! Gee, was her office ever audited?
This is sooooo as assinine. This county is so weak and will pay anyone. Pain and suffering, really? That could of been anyone, would they have paid then or are they paying her because she is the retired county treasurer? Another ... More ›
