Youth wranglers rope top 10 state placings

Four local wranglers finished the 2011-12 Texas Junior High School rodeo season among the Top 65 All Around cowboys and cowgirls in Texas, after the state competition was held May 27 through June 2 in Gonzales. All four also placed in the top 10 in three different events.
Rylan Tieken, representing Region 6, placed 62nd. The son of Charles and Robin Zella of Nixon and Gene Tieken of Gonzales, Rylan is a student in the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District.
Serving as heeler on the team with Tucker Menz of Boerne, he placed seventh in the team-roping event. The duo’s average was 55.14, with their best time set in the first go at 15.37.
Rylan also competed in the chute dogging, boys breakaway, and ribbon-roping competitions.
Cameron Crow, a student at Floresville Junior High School, placed 38th, representing Region 8.
Cameron, serving as the roper, with Zoey Wiatrek as the runner, placed ninth in the ribbon-roping event. Their average was 40.99 on three runs, with their second run of 8.960 as their best time during the state competition.
Cameron also competed in the calf roping and boys goat tying events.
In the girls division, Zoey Wiatrek, the daughter of Joey and Kristen Wiatrek of Floresville, a state qualifier in Region 8, finished the 2011-12 season in 36th place. She is a student at Floresville Middle School.
Individually, Zoey competed in the girls goat tying event and girls breakaway.
Abby Slagle, a student in the Poth Independent School District, competed in her third state competition, finishing the season in 51st place.
In the girls goat tying, Abby, representing Region 8, placed seventh. Her average on three runs was 30.75, with her fastest run in the third go at 9.45.
She also competed in the team-roping event and girls breakaway.
Region 6 pole bending champion Ciara Jenschke placed 13th in the state pole bending competition. The La Vernia Junior High School student scored her best time of 20.532 in the second go.
She also competed in girls breakaway and barrel racing.
Two other Region 6 cowgirls competed in state competion -- Shaye Lynn Jessee of La Vernia and Annabeth Peeler of Floresville.
Both girls competed in girls goat tying, girls breakaway, and ribbon roping.
Shaye Lynn, the Region 6 “Rookie of the Year,” also competed in pole bending and barrel racing.
Two Seguin cowgirls -- Codi Funderburg and Lindsei Harvey -- advanced to state after qualifying in District 8 competition.
Both girls competed in girls goat tying. Codi also competed in pole bending, while Lindsei competed in girls breakaway and barrel racing.
Most of these young athletes will begin the new rodeo season in September, hoping for another chance to compete at the state level.
