Letter: Objects not the problem
Once again, it appears liberals are using a tragedy for their own political agenda. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling on President Obama and Mitt Romney to address gun-related violence in the wake of the Aurora theater shootings.
Using his liberal logic, Bloomberg seems to ignore personal responsibility and behavior. He blames guns for the violence, just like he blames “Big Gulps” for people being overweight. Using the same logic, he and other liberals should ban trucks and autos because of drunk drivers.
The Aurora theater tragedy is just that ... a tragedy caused by a crazed and unstable person. People with bad intentions will always find a way to commit a crime, and they will use whatever instrument is handy to commit those crimes, whether a gun, a knife, a car, or any other object.
We must hold people responsible for their own behavior, rather than blame an inanimate object for a human’s behavior.
Dictatorships are born when ideas and inanimate objects become the problem. On the contrary, societies flourish when people learn and exhibit self-control and responsibility.
We must hold the shooter in Aurora completely responsible, and not excuse his behavior in any way. But we must not let ideas or inanimate objects become the “scapegoats” for liberals who want more government control over individuals’ lives.
A person committed a crime, not a gun.
