Letter: Tailgaters unaware?

Editor,

While driving into work July 27, I observed an SUV from Floresville tailgating and flashing his lights, and it occurred to me that some people might be unaware that we live in a rural county where animals (dogs, cats, skunks, etc.) are often dashing into the roadway, necessitating an immediate stop.

As luck would have it, the likelihood of this occurring seems to significantly increase as the car following you gets closer to your bumper, and becomes almost a certainty if the tailgater is also flashing his lights.

In this situation, the driver of the first car should attempt to mitigate this risk by reducing their speed until the risk is sufficiently eliminated by either (1) stopping the vehicle or (2) the tailgater is no longer behind you and the risk of darting animals has been greatly reduced.

I would like to encourage the city, county, and state law-enforcement officials to take the time to explain these facts to the tailgating driver, especially when he is flashing his lights.

Take your time ... there is no substitute for a good education.

See, you have to have a modicum of common sense to drive, or should. It would take a fool to believe you can be going 15 mph faster than those in the right (slower) lane and just pull over into them because someone going faster ... More ›

I used to wash my windshield when confronted by a tailgater....it works......I stopped this practice because I grown more mellow in my old age and finally realized that two fools are more dangerous than one fool.

I agree! Yo-yo drivers drive me up the wall!!! I'm a cruise control driver too. Set it to the speed limit, and drive on down, and the yo-yo drivers mess it all up. Especially when you get over to go around them, and they ... More ›

So then, what does "Slower traffic keep right" refer to? If you are driving slower than a vehicle behind you, and you are not making a left turn within a reasonable distance, you should move into the right or slower ... More ›

True, but I see no reason to get into a lane with slower traffic (that I am passing in the left lane) just so someone can drive 20 over the speed limit. The "slower traffic keep right" doesn't mean anyone slower ... More ›

What I would like to see is those who drive 5 to 10 mph below the posted speed limit while hugging the center stripe and refusing to yield to faster traffic be given life sentences. Especially when you try to pass them in the ... More ›
