FLORESVILLE -- Police here are asking for anyone with information about a fatal weekend hit-and-run crash to come forward.
According to Detective George Ortiz of the Floresville Police Department, two female motorists found the body of Floresville native Richard R. “Tiger” DeLeon, 53, at 6:15 a.m. July 28 near the intersection of A and Second streets in Floresville. Ortiz said that while DeLeon was known to be a frequent bicyclist, police believe he was on foot.
Ortiz said the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, and the Texas Rangers -- all of whom assisted officers at the scene -- are assisting in the investigation. Officers investigating have determined that a vehicle struck DeLeon sometime before 6 a.m. near the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at the intersection of Second and Trail streets. From there, Ortiz said, DeLeon’s body was dragged for four blocks -- a distance of approximately a quarter of a mile.
The investigation is ongoing, Ortiz said, but police already have questioned a person of interest. Witnesses said they heard a vehicle “with a really loud muffler” being driven in the area around the time of the incident.
Donations are being sought to assist DeLeon’s family with his funeral expenses. Ortiz said anyone wishing to donate can call the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville at 830-393-0459. The Floresville Police Officers Association has contributed $250, he said.
Ortiz urges anyone with information about the incident that led to DeLeon’s death to call him at 830-393-4055.
