1929-2012

Homer Hurshal Smith, 82, of Lampasas, Texas, passed away Friday, July 27, 2012, in the Spring Oaks Nursing Home in Lampasas. Homer was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Zephyr, the son of Hurshal Homer and Edna Mae (Bush) Smith.

He attended elementary at Blanket and Newberg schools and graduated from Comanche High School in 1946. He was in the farming and oil-field business before joining the Department of Public Safety in 1956. Homer was a highway patrolman for 20 years, working in the Austin and Brownwood areas. In 1976, he was promoted to sergeant and was stationed in Floresville for two years and then was transferred to Lampasas. He had the honor of being a Special Texas Ranger. He worked in Lampasas until his retirement in 1992 after serving 36 years on the force.

He was married on Dec. 1, 1949, to Charline Schlee in the Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy. Charline passed away on Feb. 17, 2001. He married Corinne Raye Power on Dec. 28, 2002, in the Faith Lutheran Church in Lampasas, and together they had been faithful members of Faith Lutheran Church and Homer was a faithful worker, head elder, and servant in the church. Homer was a very loving and caring father, brother, husband, and beloved friend, said his family.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a daughter, Pamela Jean (Smith) Beadel; and three infant sons.

Survivors include his wife, Corinne; two sons, Michael Lee Smith and Hurshal Wade Smith of Lampasas; two sisters, Mittie Cox and Tommie Lee of Comanche; two grandchildren, Tracy Lutz of Rockwall and James Beadel III of Lake Jackson; four great-granchildren, Kaeleigh and Caleb Lutz and Austin and Kinlee Beadel; three step-daughters, Annette Jensen of Omaha, Neb., and Kelley McMichael and Terry (McMichael) Diggs, both of Redding, Calif.; nine step-grandchildren, Crystal (Jensen) Dierk, Kevin Jensen, and Angela (Jensen) Moore, all of Omaha, Neb., and Pattrice McMichael, Keiron and Destiny Diggs, Brian Dillman, Brandon Dillman, and Jacob Splawn, all of Redding, Calif.; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service was held in the Faith Lutheran Church in Lampasas on Tuesday, July 31, at 10 a.m.

The DPS Color Guard honored his memory during the interment in the St. John Cemetery in Priddy.

A luncheon followed the graveside service at Priddy School, directly across the street from Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy.

Both funeral and graveside service were officiated by Pastor Tim Ochsner of Faith Lutheran Church.
