Catherine Eugenie Cummings
Catherine Eugenie Cummings went to her heavenly reward Thursday, July 19, 2012, in Lexington, Ky., at the age of 89. She was born in Houston, Texas, to Gamewell D. and Linnie Elizabeth (Collom) Gantt on Sept. 24, 1922.
She grew up in River Oaks, attended Lamar High School and graduating from Rice University. Eugenie married Walter Webster Cummings in Houston on Nov. 23, 1945, upon his return from World War II service in the U.S. Marine Corps. They moved to College Station, where he graduated from Texas A&M University two years later. They settled on the family farm in Shepherd and ran a dairy for 11 years. In the late ’50s, they moved their family to Houston, where she became a social worker. They relocated with their two children to Harlingen, where Eugenie continued what would become her lifework: advocating for children. In 1970, she became regional director of Child Protective Services for South Texas, moved to the Floresville area, and together they launched Wal-Cum Ranch, raising Beefmaster cattle and running quarter horses.
Eugenie retired to great fanfare in appreciation of her 20 years developing programs for children. She stayed active in her community, garden club, and the United Methodist Church, continuing to serve on the Wilson County Health Committee and establishing the Children’s Services Board. Three years after the 2002 death of her beloved husband, Eugenie left her home in Floresville to be near her son in Lexington, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Webster Cummings.
Eugenie is survived by her daughter, Catherine Gale Melton and husband Robert of Altus, Okla.; son Walter David Cummings and wife Pamela of Lexington, Ky.; five grandchildren, Ericka Lynn and John Pullin of Floresville, Justin D. and Jenny Cummings of San Antonio, Matthew D. Cummings of San Antonio, Dawn Elizabeth Melton of Dallas, and Robby and Jessica Melton of Altus, Okla. Eugenie was blessed with seven great-grandchildren.
Eugenie’s strong will, noble spirit, and kind heart will be missed by her family, her many friends, and the myriad children she helped protect. She is with her heavenly Father, rejoicing with friends and family who have gone on before her.
