Two-a-days to signal start of fall sports season
Future members of the Poth Pirette volleyball team run through a series of drills during a packed summer camp session offered by Pirette Head Coach Patti Zenner.
After a summer break that was too long for some and too short for others, the area’s high school athletes are about to trade in their swim trunks for practice uniforms as they hit the fields and courts for two-a-days on Monday, Aug. 6.
To help prepare football, volleyball, cross-country, and tennis teams for competition, coaches will begin pushing their athletes through a series of workouts, often having the kids report twice a day. Some have been dreading the intense preseason workouts, although others, including most coaches, are ready to get started.
“We’re ready,” said Stockdale Head Football Coach Josh West. “We’re excited about the season. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we’re ready to get going.”
Other than East Central and Floresville, the area’s high schools will begin football workouts Aug. 6. Because they participated in spring football, the Hornets and Tigers will lose a week in August, and are set to begin workouts Monday, Aug. 13.
All six of the area’s volleyball programs will begin workouts Aug. 6, as will the cross-country and fall tennis teams. The volleyball and tennis teams will begin competition nearly immediately, while the football and cross-country teams will begin competing closer to the start of school. Most practices and workouts are open, though some will be closed to the public.
For more information about a particular fall sports program, contact the athletic director at your school, or speak to the program’s head coach.
