We drove into San Antonio Wednesday evening just to eat at Chick-fil-A, and it turned out to be an enjoyable experience.
I don’t like boycotts, as they are negative, but I do enjoy positive actions that show support. It was gratifying to be in a crowd of like-minded people. At least those who were at the Brooks City-Base location Wednesday evening seemed to be like-minded.
We arrived close to 8 p.m and the parking lot was full. After driving around a bit, we finally got a parking spot. People were parking in nearby lots and walking across the street. They were coming in droves, with a purpose. There was no anger at the crowded parking conditions. No horns blared at the drive-through line that blocked most of the driveways.
People walked into Chick-fil-A with a purpose, which appeared to be as much to prove a point as it was to get their food. We talked to those around us who were eager to share: “I wasn’t hungry, but my husband said we needed to come to show support to this business.” She joked, however, that she “might be hungry by the time they reached the order counter!”
Wait time in the line was about 30 minutes at that time of the evening. Apparently it was like that all day, as a friend went for lunch and the crowds were even larger. When we left, closer to 9 p.m., there were just as many people hurrying to get in, and the drive-through line never let up.
It was quite a challenge for the crew, as they hustled to make sure tables were cleared. Everything went smoothly, despite the obviously larger-than-usual number of hungry patrons. There was plenty of “service with a smile,” and responses to customers of, “It’s my pleasure.”
What a delightful change of pace from some fast-food establishments that might give a response more like, “Sure, dude!” It was “my pleasure” to be among the crowd at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday night.
A lady in line ahead of us profusely thanked the manager, I’m assuming this was thanks for their pro-family stance. The manager promptly expressed his thanks to the customers for their support.
At another table, conversations could be heard about Rahm Emanuel who is the mayor of Chicago and one of those who pronounced his opposition to allowing any more Chick-fil-A stores to open in that city.
All in all, it was a friendly visit and good food. I heard nothing about “gay rights,” and I don’t think that’s what this Appreciation Day was all about. It seemed to be about standing up for free speech, and the right to worship freely and to express religious beliefs without fearing negative repercussions or persecution.
As we left, I couldn’t help but notice the big American flag flying boldly in the evening breeze. Although it had been years since I’ve eaten at a Chick-fil-A, it just may become my new favorite place to stop for a quick breakfast or lunch. |
