Floresville comptroller Tom Smith resigns

FLORESVILLE -- The city of Floresville is actively seeking another comptroller after its interim comptroller, Tom Smith, resigned to take another position in Bulverde.
Smith was responsible for drafting the current proposed budget for the city of Floresville. This could impede the city’s efforts to craft a budget for the coming fiscal year, which must be adopted by Aug. 31, according to the city charter.
Constituent Liaison Sherry Pollok said Smith was employed on a contract basis and decided to take a position closer to home.
“We were hoping to hire Tom and he was one of the top candidates for the position as we went through the hiring process, but he is from Bulverde and chose to take a position there, which offered him more money than we could,” Pollok said. “Obviously, we would have wanted to keep him, but his contract was up and he made his choice.”
“He wanted to stay in Floresville, but he was offered a better job closer to home with more money,” said Mayor Daniel Tejada. “He told us what he would be making and we just could not match it. He came here as a temp, did his job, and unfortunately, we could not afford him.”
Smith was hired from Accountemps, an accounting temp service, on the recommendation of auditor Pat Wagner.
“Tom helped to get the finances of the city in order,” Pollok said. “He created the current system to which we have our current proposed budget, but he did leave all of his notes and forms behind for whoever we hire next to be able to continue his work.”
Pollok said the city is currently attempting to fill the comptroller position as quickly as possible.
“We had been advertising the position for a while, with Tom being one of the frontrunners for the job,” Pollok said. “As of today [Aug. 2] we have conducted four interviews and are expecting two more. From there, we will call back for secondary interviews and make a decision at that point. We are hoping to have a candidate for the position sometime next week.”
One of the options before the city is to combine the finance director and comptroller roles into one position.
“We are looking into a variety of options,” Pollok said. “Combining the two positions into one is something we are definitely considering. If that were to occur, we are looking at reassigning Fonda [Kellner] to another position.”
