Melrose Grace Leifeste
Melrose Grace Leifeste, 90, passed away in Fredericksburg, Texas, with her family by her side Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012. She was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Hilda, the daughter of Eugene and Meta Zesch Geistweidt.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason, where she was baptized and confirmed. Melrose was raised in Mason County and was a 1939 graduate of Mason High School and attended Tarleton State College.
On Oct. 12, 1940, Melrose married Dietrich Charles “D.C.” Leifeste in the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg. Melrose and D.C. moved to many places during D.C.’s World War II military service. They settled in Mason after the war and purchased a furniture, appliance, and gift store along with a propane gas dealership.
She was involved in her church and community and enjoyed playing bridge and 42, gardening, and taking care of her family. Melrose lived in Mason until failing health brought about a move to Fredericksburg. She maintained a clear mind and sharp wit till the very end of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
Melrose is survived by her children, Rodney and Betsy Leifeste of Floresville, Randy and Phyllis Leifeste of Fredericksburg, and Dale and Rheba Pence of Floresville; her grandchildren, Audra and Brian Vasek, Keva and Eddie Kramer, Marsha and Jess Porter, and Dustin and Veronica Durst; her great-grandchildren, Colton and Connor Vasek, Ellroy Kramer, Blake, Camry, and Keylee Porter, and Carson and Ryan Durst; her brother, Gordon Geistweidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason.
Interment followed in the Gooch Cemetery in Mason.
Serving as pallbearers were Dustin Durst, Jess Porter, Brian Vasek, Eddie Kramer, Wayne Geistweidt, Gary Geistweidt, and Ted Geistweidt.
