1934-2012

Joseph Theodore Labus, 78, of Panna Maria, Texas, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Joe was born July 3, 1934, to Theodore M. and Eleonora Dragon Labus on the Labus homestead, located north of Panna Maria.

Born into a farming/ranching family, Joe continued to carry on in the family business. He was a member of the South Texas Cattle Ranchers Association. A skilled blacksmith and tractor mechanic, Joe took great pride in all his work. He could fix or refurbish anything. Joe was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Polish Choir in Panna Maria. He was an exceptional fiddle player who could not read music, but “played by ear,” with his most requested fiddle tune being the “Orange Blossom Special.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Lucian, Lambert, and Florian “Sam” Labus.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Debbie Pawelek and husband Randy of Panna Maria; his son, Mark Labus and wife Geralyn of Hobson; and his grandchildren, Ryan Pawelek and Rebekah Pawelek of Panna Maria and Samuel Labus of Hobson. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, whom he held dear to his heart, from the Labus and Dragon families and their descendants of Panna Maria and abroad.

A rosary was recited Friday, July 20, at 7 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Panna Maria.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Wieslaw Iwaniec officiating.

Interment followed in the Panna Maria Cemetery in Panna Maria.

Serving as pallbearers were Ryan Pawelek, Gary Pawelek, Randy Pawelek, Shelby Buehring, Gene Dragon, and Mark Brysch.
