Now, before I start getting hate mail regarding this column, let me just assure you that the stereotypes about Republicans hating the poor and being cold-hearted are totally unfounded.

Democrats would have you believe that we want to throw Granny off the cliff (Paul Ryan, anyone?) and that Republicans want to end government-assistance programs. Again, this could not be further from the truth.

Most Republicans I know, yes even many of my fellow Tea Partiers, agree that we cannot completely abolish all types of government assistance; people are just too dependent on it for that to happen. The purpose of this column is to clarify my personal stance and the position of many Republicans when it comes to government-assistance programs, so as to arm you with ammunition the next time some Democrat tells you that Republicans are evil and want to end entitlement programs.

Social welfare programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), food stamps, and others exist as, and are meant to be, a safety net. The United States is the richest, most powerful country in the world and, therefore, should have a social safety net to care for those who need it. If you are disabled and cannot work or were born with a physical or mental impairment, then the safety net is for you. If circumstances come about where you need help while you are between jobs or if you are a single parent trying to better yourself by going to college and need help to buy food, the safety net is for you.

But a safety net is just as the name implies: a means to catch you before you hit the bottom. The social safety net in America is to ensure people do not go hungry or are without the means to better themselves. For all of those people who truly need assistance in getting by, the rest of us, including Republicans and Tea Partiers, are happy to help you.

But let me tell you what we are not happy about. We are not happy when we see you buy two baskets full of junk food while talking on your latest iPhone, which you pulled from your Louis Vuitton handbag. We are also not happy when, at the same time as you use that little white card to buy $500 worth of junk, you pull out a $100 bill to buy your two cases of beer and cigarettes. This, of course, is anecdotal, but you get the picture. Welfare abuse in America is rampant and only getting worse. President Barack Obama is now calling for waivers for the work requirement for the Welfare-to-Work program. This will be disastrous for the country.

The problem lies within the destruction of the family unit and Uncle Sam providing what Daddy used to. More and more children are being raised by families where relying on government welfare is seen as acceptable. As these children grow up, they are raising more children to believe that the government will give them “free” money if they do not work, but they fail to realize that there is no free money. It comes off the backs of good, honest, hardworking people who hold down jobs and pay taxes.

It is disheartening for many who do not accept government assistance to go shopping during the first of the month, because as we pick up the few store-brand items we get to feed our families on our budgets, people who do not work are buying baskets full of name-brand merchandise. Society is becoming less motivated to work hard, because those who don’t are living better than the rest of us.

The solution

There are solutions to the problem.

It may seem like tough love, but the future of our nation is at risk from massive spending on entitlement programs. Not including Medicaid and Medicare, the national government spent $466 billion on entitlement programs. That is about $4 billion more than the GDPs of Greece, Syria, Lebanon, and Libya combined. Think about that: We spend more than four nations’ total market value for all final goods and services just on welfare and food-stamp style programs. That is outrageous and something must be done to curb the abuse.

A solution to the problem must come from strict entitlement reform. If I want to get a job, chances are I will need to take a drug test, so food-stamp and welfare recipients should, as well. Work or an effort to find work must be proven for all types of government assistance, including food stamps, unless the person is disabled.

If a person is physically able to work, there is no excuse why he/she is not pulling their own weight ... period. Anyone on government assistance either should provide proof of employment, proof they are looking for employment, or proof of them furthering their education. Anyone caught committing fraud or misusing their assistance should be permanently banned from any future assistance and all purchases should be made via thumbprint rather than a card that someone can sell to another person.

In a perfect world, the American government would end entitlement programs and charities would take over the process of assisting people to get food and on their feet, but it is not a perfect world and there is no way to get government out of the welfare business; there are just too many votes in it.

People need to become more reliant on self, and less reliant on the government. Democrats want to push more entitlement programs because they want the votes of the people they are giving assistance to. It’s not about caring for you, it’s about buying your vote; that should be obvious.

The people who truly care are the Republicans, because we want you to be able to take care of yourself and stand on your own two feet. We want to help you if you really need it, but if not, then we want you to chase the American dream and become successful. We want to teach you how to fish, not just give you a fish.

People from all over the world come to the United States, not because of the government programs, but because if you work hard in America, anyone can be successful. You don’t need a government program to do it, all you need is some hard work and determination.

So, the next time a Democrat starts ranting about how Republicans want to take away welfare from the poor, let them know that what we really want is for no one to need welfare anymore, because we provided them the hand-up they needed to become successful and self-reliant. Until next time, God bless you and God bless the United States of America.
