FORNEY -- While many kids her age were enjoying a relaxing summer vacation, 11-year-old Alessandra Garcia of Floresville was busy playing competitive softball, and helped her team win a World Series Tournament championship.

Despite temperatures that hovered in the triple-digit range, Garcia and her San Antonio Tap Out team worked their way through the competition July 26-29 at a 30-team, four-day tournament held in Forney. The IFA-VTD-sponsored event was set up as a double-elimination tournament, though Tap Out never suffered a loss.

When the final day of games began Sunday morning, Garcia and Tap Out took the field against the Austin Stix, a team they had faced earlier in the year. Like Tap Out, the Stix were also unbeaten through three days of tournament play, and hadn’t even given up a run in the tournament. Garcia and Tap Out changed all that, though, and defeated Stix by the final score of 5-1.

Because it was a double-elimination tournament, however, Stix was able to win out in the losers bracket, and eventually reached a rematch later that day against Tap Out for the championship.

After three scoreless innings in the championship game, Tap Out put the game’s first runs on the board in the fourth, driving three runners across home plate, and taking a 3-0 lead in the contest. The game’s time limit was reached during the Stix at-bat in the inning, and the Austin team’s opportunities were limited. The Stix were able to score one run, but Tap Out picked up the third out, and ended the championship game with a 3-1 victory and an unbeaten tournament appearance.

Garcia, who plays center field for Tap Out, will enter the sixth grade at Floresville Middle School this fall. She is the daughter of Guillermo and Edgma Garcia.
