1919-2012

Emma Raska Korbell, 93, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012. She was born June 6, 1919, in Floresville, Texas, the daughter of John and Emma Raska. Emma was raised on a family farm with five brothers and sisters, where a strong belief in God, hard work, traditional family values, and close community were always important in her life.

She graduated from Floresville High School in 1937. After her marriage in 1939 to Charles Korbell, also from Floresville, and the birth of their four children, the family moved to Hondo, where she was active in the church and community for 12 years, prior to relocating to San Antonio.

Emma was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. Her life was devoted to God, her family, church, and friends. Emma was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (KJZT), and the Altar Society, and was active at St. Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Church for 40 years.

Caring for her family and serving the church were closest to her heart and Emma believed her children were a special gift from God. Her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren were very special to her and she always loved spending time with them. Times when her family gathered together at her home brought her special joy.

Emma enjoyed watercolor painting, playing cards, sewing, quilting, fishing, and cooking, and she loved to dance.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Charles Korbell Sr.; and her son, Wayne Korbell.

Emma is survived by her sons, John Korbell and wife Bonnie and Charles Korbell Jr. and wife Cheryl; her daughter, Sharon Kidd and husband Mike; her daughter-in-law, Gayle Korbell; her grandchildren, Katherine Brown, Caroline Carrington, Jay Korbell, Brook Clark, Emily Beard, Danna Korbell, Michael and Sean Kidd, Allison Aderholt, Brian Korbell, and Jennifer Charbonneau; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by all of those who knew her, but especially by her family, whose lives she touched through love, care, and instilling family values and God’s love in each of them.

The family would like to offer a special thank-you for all the care, love, and support provided by the staff at Emeritus Lincoln Heights, and especially to Maria Rios, her private caregiver. The family thanks all of her dear friends who were like family to her and who brought so much joy into her life, especially in later years.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 6-7 p.m. in Porter Loring Chapel in San Antonio, with a rosary recited Thursday at 7 p.m.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in San Antonio.

A private graveside service was held for the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Floresville Academic Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 281, Floresville, TX 78114; the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Bishop Odin No. 1758, 1710 Clower St., San Antonio, TX 78201; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
