1924-2012

Walter Marcelyn Ralls, 87, of San Antonio/Floresville, Texas, passed away quietly in his residence on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Walter was born and raised in DeQueen, Ark.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he trained as a naval aviator to fly Wacos and served on the Pacific front. After the war, Walter attended Magnolia State College, where he met and married his wife of 63 years, Grace Parkinson Ralls. Further education took them to Tulsa, Okla., to attend Tulsa University, where he worked toward a master’s degree in geology. Walter had a quick mind and could tell fascinating stories of his life to any who listened. He also was an avid reader and wordsmith, even giving his children “dictionary drills” when they were young.

In 1952, Walter went to work for the Osborn Oil Co., an independent oil company in San Antonio. He was very well-respected in his field and successful in helping his company find oil and gas reserves throughout the United States and Canada. When Osborn Oil later split into several family enterprises, he went with the Osborn Heirs Co. as both an employee and then a consultant until his retirement.

In 1983, Walter and Grace moved to Floresville. Walter enjoyed farming and always seemed to have a successful garden, whether in the back yard of their San Antonio home or on their Floresville property. He enjoyed growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables, but tomatoes and corn were his prized crops. He also loved planting trees, often giving trees to family members. His passion was turning his Floresville home and property into a joyous place for his children and grandchildren. From digging fish ponds and swimming holes, building tree houses, and hanging rope swings to providing go-karts and four-wheelers, raising various livestock, and arranging tractor rides, Walter built the perfect retreat for his family. He could often be seen playing pool in Floresville with a pack of grandchildren. While he was exceedingly proud of his children, his greatest pride was in his grandchildren. Walter’s true legacy is bound up in his family as he loved them and was greatly loved in return.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Parkinson Ralls.

He is survived by their four married children, daughters Susan Feldtman and Nancy Olivares, and sons Matt Ralls and Mark Ralls; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Special thanks are extended to Miguel Espinoza, Dad’s dedicated caregiver for more than two years, and to the many others at Emeritus who showed kindness to Dad in their own special ways.

Private family services were held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Foster Care Friendz of Wilson County, 1438 C.R. 314, Floresville, TX 78114, Attn: Kim Jarutowicz. This is a tax-deductible contribution that will be directed to the Grace Ralls Rainbow Room for Wilson County Child Protective Services. This room holds supplies for use by social workers when a child is abandoned or removed from a dangerous home situation. Donations help keep the supplies available.
