LVHS Cub Camp a success!
Dr. Tom Harvey, superintendent of schools in the La Vernia Independent School District, speaks at Fish Camp.
La Vernia High School Cub Camp, a weeklong orientation designed to help incoming LVHS freshmen to learn everything they need to know about high school, was held July 23-27.
The new high school students learned about credits, transcripts, scheduling, career planning, diploma options, college readiness, and much more. The goal of this program was to provide students with learning opportunities to help them have a successful high school educational experience.
The first evening held the “Cub Kick-Off Event” which was a parent/student information session where the high school counselors presented information on what to expect in the years to come. Following the session, tables were set up with information on different clubs, programs, and activities available at LVHS.
On Tuesday, a Career Fair was held, where students and parents were encouraged to come by and visit with representatives from college campuses, as well as individual professionals, for useful information on college and career readiness. LVHS would like to thank the following organizations for their time and information donated to our event: H-E-B, Texas Lutheran University, St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Associated Builders and Contractors, Christus Santa Rosas Children’s Hospital, Trinity University, Bexar County Adult Probation, San Antonio Police Department, and San Antonio CPA Society. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Wednesday, the campers attended “Career Cruising.” The students completed career interest inventories that will help them track activities and classes to plan for college/tech/military and work-force entry.
The La Vernia famous “Fish Camp” was Thursday and the attendance level reached a record high! All incoming freshmen received a fish camp T-shirt, and lunch was provided. Students received their lockers and schedules, and met their teachers while touring the high school. On the final day of Cub Camp, the freshmen worked individually with a high school counselor to develop their four-year plans that represents their college and career goals. Again, LVHS would like to thank everyone who assisted and attended, making Cub Camp the best one yet!
