Controversy already has attached itself to the upcoming Floresville municipal election, as a candidate has been told by City Secretary Margaret Aranda -- who also serves as the city's election judge -- that he is ineligible to run.

Floresville businessman Jim Miller, who filed Aug. 13 to run for city council Place 1, was told after the filing deadline had passed that he is prevented from seeking elected office in Floresville because of his voter registration status. Miller registered to vote in the city earlier this year.

"It's disappointing," Miller said. "I believe that the truth and the law will prevail."

Miller further stated that the Texas Supreme Court has ruled on a number of occasions that voter registration is not conclusive evidence of eligibility.

For more, read the Aug. 29 print version of the Wilson County News.
