1911-2012

Mattie Louise Phillips Fatheree Starnes died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at the age of 101 years, 3 months, and 8 days in her home in San Antonio, Texas. She was born May 4, 1911, to Caroline Louise Moore and Alvin Wilson Phillips in Wichita Falls.

Mattie Lou was an avid golfer into her 90s and proud of her club championship and three “holes in one.” She was active in the Methodist church. She is past Worthy Matron of the Stockdale Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, T.J. Fatheree and William Starnes; her brothers, Richard Paul Phillips and Alvin Wilson Phillips Jr.; her sister, Paxton Phillips Fatheree; and her niece and nephews, Linda Louise Fatheree Stiehl, Warren Stiehl Jr., and Jack Cook.

Mattie Lou is survived by her nieces, Martha Paxton Fatheree Cook and Susan Phillips Pruett and husband Robert; and her nephews, Matt Phillips Fatheree and wife Melissa and Bill Fatheree and wife Roxie. She also leaves more than 50 great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews. She was affectionately known to them as “Auntie Lou.” Also surviving is her lifelong friend, Mrs. Jo Daniel.

The family wants to thank her dear caregiver, Delora Penaloza, for her loving care for many years.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m. in the Finch Funeral Home in Stockdale, with the Rev. Stephen Echols of the Stockdale Methodist Church presiding.

Interment followed in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale.

Serving as pallbearers were Tommy Luker, Joe Bustamante, Dikki Guerra, Richard Lee, Bryce Maryfield, Donnie Janicek, and Ben Pruett.
