Steven Edward Cole, 50, who is charged with five counts of aggravated assault against a public servant for his alleged role in a Jan. 15, 2011, shootout with area law-enforcement personnel, soon will face a trial by a jury of his peers.

Cole was present in Wilson County district court for an Aug. 15 docket call. According to court records, jury selection in his trial is set for Aug. 27.

Five officers -- Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dale Harrell and deputies Raymond “Jeff” Roser, Toribio “Toby” Garcia, and Travis Beck, and Patrolman Eric Hutchinson of the Floresville Police Department -- responded to Cole’s home near the corner of Lost Spring and Clear Spring drives north of Floresville, after neighbors reported that Cole was firing guns outside his home at 2 a.m. Roser and Garcia, who were among the first to respond, were peppered with shotgun pellets as Cole allegedly fired at them through rain and dense fog.

When a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety SWAT Team entered the home a few hours later, Cole was found lying on the floor. It was believed that he was shot when officers returned fire.

Two other defendants present for docket call Aug. 15 were given new jury selection dates. Set to return to court for a docket call Sept. 5 ahead of a Sept. 24 jury selection date are:

•Ramon Lopez, 26, charged with murder in the June 6, 2011, stabbing death of his roommate, 57-year-old Jose Antonio Hernandez, in their home near Graytown.

•Bobby Schroeder, 28, of Floresville, charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit aggravated robbery in connection with a March 15 incident in Floresville.
