Stockdale ISD to receive $100K Cool Schools grant
Stockdale Independent School District Superintendent Paul Darilek (from left) looks on as former Stockdale school board trustee Rick Rutland receives a plaque in recognition of 18 years of service on the board from board President Sal Urrabazo.
STOCKDALE -- With budgetary cuts occurring across the nation, especially in school districts, the Stockdale Independent School District (ISD) has received good news, in the form of a Texas Cool Schools grant.
According to Stockdale ISD Superintendent Paul Darilek after the Aug. 13 school board meeting, Trane Air Conditioning was named the vendor for the $100,000 grant. The grant money will replace 10 air-conditioning units in the elementary school.
While the grant gives relief from the heat, taxpayers may feel more heat when adjusting their budgets for the anticipated 8-cent increase in the district’s proposed tax rate of $1.34 per $100 of valuation. This rate is still lower than the $1.417 set six years ago.
Maintenance and operations will decrease by 4.6 percent, while the debt service will increase by 34.3 percent, according to the June 27 budget public notice posted. This increase, according to Darilek, is attributed to the $3.25 million bond issue voters approved in November 2010.
Taxpayers with a 2012 average home valued at $83,128 will see an increase of $66.51 in their bills, totaling $1,113.92.
According to certified market values for the school district from the Wilson County Appraisal District, the district gained $19,197,621 in appraised property value, or an increase of 4.41 percent.
Budget items dominated the August meeting, when the board of trustees approved:
•The Wilson County Appraisal District (WCAD) operating budget as presented by Assistant Chief Appraiser Brian Stahl.
•To continue with Texas Association of Public Schools as the district’s property insurance provider, as presented by Frank Pruski. An increase in premiums is anticipated, due to the addition of $3 million in new construction, including the junior high/high school cafeteria and vocational-agriculture shop.
•An exemption policy for semester exams at the high school level. Data will be sent home for parents to review.
•To accept bids on the sale of the old Head Start building, located at 505 Ninth St. in Stockdale.
•Setting a tax rate hearing for Thursday, Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m.
•The hiring of four teachers to fill vacancies in elementary, junior high, and high school special education, and junior high math.
