FLORESVILLE -- The city of Floresville is offering a first glance to citizens of what the newly approved sports complex may look like. Mayor Daniel Tejada has released a design drafted for another city by Heartland Engineering, which may be similar to the design pending for Floresville.

The Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) approved the loan for the $2.1 million project in July. The project will include major renovations to existing facilities and the construction of a new sports complex behind the Floresville Event Center on S.H. 97.

“The new sports complex will feature some of the same architectural design as the Floresville Event Center; we want it to have that theme and will be relying on it as a basis for our designs,” Tejada said. “A company named Heartland came to a meeting and offered to show us designs for free. The design released is a park they designed for another city, but ours will be similar to it.”

The main difference is that this design doesn’t have a splash pad or football field built into it. The Floresville Sports Complex will, Tejada said.

Tejada said the city of Floresville entered discussions with several engineers and park-planning firms, such as Heartland, and that the city has a chain of events to begin the project.

“There are several things which have to happen to get the ball rolling on the project,” Tejada said. “The 4B [FEDC] and the city would enter into an inter-local agreement, which is what the council authorized Andy [Joslin, city manager] to start looking into at the last meeting. Then the second is for the 4A to lease the land behind the event center to the city. This could probably be done for a dollar a year.

“The city council would have to approve these agreements at a meeting,” the mayor continued.

Once the agreements are in place, the city can start looking at a final design, based on what it can afford with the $2.1 million loan. The mayor said the city has received input from the youth associations and adult leagues as to what their needs are.

For the new construction, Tejada said, the needs include four new baseball fields and the splash pad, renovations to the three existing fields, and one football field. All of these would be lighted. Planned work also will address erosion on the San Antonio River in the park.

“This is our wish list for the project,” Tejada said. “There is a lot we can get done with $2.1 million, and I know it’s going to be a great thing for our city.”
