Abortion, it is really a choice?

The debate over whether or not a woman has the right to choose the fate of an unborn fetus has raged in America for decades.

With the issue of contraception and women’s health raised during the past few months, it is important to recognize that although the method of contraception should be the choice of women, whether to carry a child to full term should not.

Advocates for abortion rights cite the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v Wade as their precedent to grant abortion rights. In this landmark case, the Supreme Court found that a woman’s right to privacy included abortion rights. Since then, millions of unborn children have been slaughtered at the hands of clinics and doctors nationwide.

I say slaughtered because that is exactly what happens. The fetus is either injected, cut, or vacuumed out of the mother’s body. In fact, prior to George W. Bush’s signing of the partial-birth abortion act in 2003, it was legal for a doctor to partially deliver a child and then ram a metal rod into its skull to remove the brain. It was deemed abortion because supporters believed that if the infant did not draw breath, it was not alive.

Democrats and former President Bill Clinton supported this barbaric practice as evidenced by Clinton’s vetoing of the 1997 partial-birth abortion ban. The Democratic Party actually vetoed a bill, which would have prevented the murder of near-full-term children. While in the Illinois Senate, Barack Obama voted against SB 230, which was a bill designed to ban partial-birth abortion.

As with all controversial issues, there must be a compromise. If I, or many other conservatives, had my way, abortion would be illegal in all circumstances. It is my firm belief that interfering with the natural process of life should never occur, but I am not an idealist. I am a realist and, being a realist, I understand that there must be a compromise if we are ever going to enact any sustainable abortion policy.

All terminations of pregnancy, whether the life of the mother is in danger or not, should be outlawed. I do not know any parent alive who would not give up their life for the life of their child, myself included. All doctors should attempt to save both infant and mother in those types of situations.

In the cases of rape and incest, the victim should be allowed to take an emergency contraceptive such as a Plan-B or morning-after pill. This would stop fertilization or end the pregnancy while still on the cellular level. In my opinion, this is still abortion, but herein lies the compromise. Victims of sexual assault and incest would have five days to seek remedy for what has happened to them.

If the child is going to be born with a disfigured limb or Down syndrome, there is no justification in terminating the life of that child. One of the most successful women I know was born with a clubfoot and was amputated above the knee. She has a wonderful life and family now.

Anyone who becomes pregnant has a moral obligation to that child to carry it to full term. It is not that child’s fault that the mother was not ready to fulfill her responsibilities. The least the mother can do is to carry that child to term and turn it over to an adoption agency.

Many people do not realize the gravity of what is at stake during the abortion debate. These are children who are being murdered before they have a right to speak or fend for themselves. The one person they are relying upon for security and nourishment, their mother, is the one who is trying to end their life; it is betrayal on an unfathomable level. If you ever have any doubt about the seriousness of the issue, search online for pictures of aborted fetuses. Look at those pictures and see the tiny fingers and noses, and then tell me that you just can’t carry that baby to full term.

The right to life is the most fundamental granted to man. It is the first of the rights specified on the Declaration of Independence and should not be taken from those too young to defend themselves. So, let’s not call it pregnancy termination or abortion, let’s call it by its actual name: the murder of young children.

If you cannot handle the responsibility that comes in conceiving a child, then prophylactics or birth control should be standard. Although abstinence is always the best method for preventing unwanted pregnancy, I am a realist and know that is not going to happen. I am a Catholic and birth control goes against my faith, but many Catholics use birth control; again, I am a realist.

The bottom line is this: Abortion, for any reason, is murder. Those who engage in sexual activities must be prepared to carry that child into the world, for the other option is too grim to consider.
