Five new deputies for the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office are among the items included in Wilson County’s proposed fiscal year 2013 budget, as discussed by the Wilson County Commissioners Court during its Aug. 27 meeting. According to interim County Auditor Verna Gorzell, the size of the budget as of Aug. 1 stood at $15,079,190.

In addition to new deputies -- which with salary, benefits, and health insurance could cost the county an additional $240,000 -- the sheriff’s office also is requesting an additional $189,000 for vehicles, accessories, and fuel.

Existing employees of the sheriff’s office also could see an increase in pay. Deputies making less than $30,000 per year would have their salaries increased to the greater of either that figure or 3 percent more than their current salary. Remaining deputies could see a 3-percent salary increase.

Jailers and dispatchers being paid less than $24,000 could see their pay increased to the greater of either that figure or 3 percent more than their current salary.

Cost-of-living salary increases of approximately 3 percent also are proposed for the rest of the county’s employees and elected officials.

The county employs approximately 150 workers, Gorzell said. According to preliminary numbers prepared by former Auditor Ray Wolff, the county projects spending $850 per month for individual health insurance for each employee -- a cost of more than $1.5 million for the coming fiscal year.

The county’s current budget is being supported by an ad valorem tax rate of 45.33 cents per $100 of assessed property value. While the commissioners have yet to propose a tax rate, the consensus among them was that the rollback rate of 46.57 cents would be proposed. More about the county’s proposed budget will follow in the Sept. 5 edition of the Wilson County News.

The commissioners considered and acted upon several other items of business during their Aug. 27 meeting. See related article, page 4A.
