Ray withdraws, Brownlow to run unopposed in November
FLORESVILLE -- Longtime Floresville Independent School District (ISD) trustee Tom Ray no longer is a candidate in the Nov. 6 general election.
According to information provided by the school district, Ray -- who served as the representative for single-member District 1 for 10 years -- applied to run for re-election Aug. 13. But on Aug. 22, Ray submitted a request to have his name withdrawn from the ballot.
Ray told the Wilson County News Aug. 23 that he not only had withdrawn from the race, but also resigned his position on the board. He declined further comment.
William “Bill” R. Meuth Jr. and Dr. Joel Odom are the two remaining candidates in the District 1 race. Incumbent Neysa Choate was the only candidate to file for the Floresville ISD single-member District 4 race.
Also running unopposed in November is Darrell T. Brownlow, who filed to run as Wilson County’s representative to the San Antonio River Authority board. Gov. Rick Perry appointed Brownlow to the board in 2011 and after November, Brownlow will serve the remainder of an unexpired term that ends in 2013.
In addition to those races -- and the numerous federal, state, and county elections -- the city of Floresville and the East Central ISD are holding elections Nov. 6. Among those who filed for a place on the Floresville ballot are:
•Mayor: Diana Garza, Johnnie Rene Gomez, Christina Jarzombek, and Tomas Robles.
•Council, Place 1: Incumbent Jesse Christopher Flores and Jim Miller. Just after the filing deadline, Floresville City Secretary Margaret Aranda -- the city’s election judge -- informed Miller Aug. 20 that he was ineligible to run; this has since changed. See related article, page 1A.
•Council, Place 2: Incumbent Mario Morones.
With regard to the East Central ISD, the following candidates filed:
•Single-member Dist. 3: Incumbent Randall Gearhart of Adkins faces a challenge from John Massengale.
•Single-member Dist. 4: Incumbent Victor Garza.
•Single-member Dist. 6: Incumbent Claudia V. Barrientos.
More information about the candidates will be available in a candidates’ forum, which will appear in an upcoming issue of the Wilson County News.
