On Aug. 13, the La Vernia Independent School District held its annual “New Staff Orientation.” Superintendent Tom Harvey welcomed each new staff member and discussed his “open door policy,” encouraging interaction from the new employees and offering to visit classrooms and departments when the staff members would like to share current projects and programs. Many of the new employees expressed appreciation for the involvement by a superintendent, and stated that this was the first time they had one offer to be an integral part of the learning process.  . . .
