Area Scouts enjoy Rockport outing
Park Ranger Bill Wilson and Scouts Sarah, Courtney, Catherine, Joseph, and Kyle gather at the Big Tree, a 1,000-year-old live oak in Rockport.
Girl Scouts from Wilson County traveled to Rockport Aug. 3 to camp for two nights at Goose Island State Park. Seven juniors and one cadette from Troops 2532, 865, and 3013 spent the weekend swimming at the beach, fishing on the pier, and learning about the “Big Tree.”
The girls camped with their families in tents and cooked all their meals outside, earning the junior Camper and Simple Meals badges. The Scouts hiked at night, learned to tie six different kinds of knots, and made homemade ice cream.
“The girls had a great time, and I think all of them had at least one new experience this weekend. One family had never camped before. Another had never fished in salt water. That’s what Girl Scouts is all about,” said Service Unit Outdoor Consultant Lisa Theuret.
Park Ranger Bill Wilson taught the Scouts about the state’s efforts to save the “Big Tree,” a 1,000-year-old live oak. For example, during a drought, the local fire department waters the tree. It takes them four hours to produce the equivalent of one-half inch of rain.
Despite the heat and mosquitoes, the girls and their families enjoyed Goose Island State Park and encourage everyone to support your Texas state parks: go camping!
