Girl Scouts learn fire safety, more
Wait a minute ... three of the young future firefighters ring the bell that signifies that a recruit wants to quit. Maybe one of them will change her mind when she becomes an adult.
Girl Scout Troop No. 3162 of Floresville spent the end of their summer visiting the San Antonio Fire Department Training Academy.
The girls spent time with Fire Training Instructor Bennie Marberry. The girls began with classroom instructions about fire safety and how to prepare their homes and families for a fire. The girls even crawled on the floor and felt doors to simulate what to do in case of a fire. After that, the girls were able to hear what it takes to become a firefighter and the education you need.
Mr. Marberry showed the girls a video that was made by a graduating class about their experience in the academy. Once the video was over, it was time for a question-and-answer session. The girls were full of questions and at times surprised Mr. Marberry with what they were asking.
Once class time was over, it was time to see what the fire recruits go through. The girls were taken out to the training grounds, shown a firetruck that they were able to climb on, and were even able to pretend they were the firemen. Then they were taken to the burn building where they saw the large staircase that recruits must be able to go up and down with all their gear.
Also, the girls were able to inspect a car that is used for fire and rescue. Mr. Marberry allowed the girls to try on uniforms and some equipment.
At one point, some of the girls learned about the bell that is only rung when a recruit wants to quit.
It was a wonderful experience for the girls and led them in the right direction to earn their First Aid patch.
