FLORESVILLE -- When Head Coach Regan Curran left Stockdale to take over the troubled volleyball program in Floresville, she brought new ideas, new energy, and a renewed vigor to the Jaguars. Now, in her second year, Curran is looking to build on the team’s successes last year, and to once again guide her team into postseason play.

When two-a-days started and everyone was trying to get into a routine, though, Curran found a new set of challenges to her coaching career. She was expecting her first child, and was forced to work a bit harder at balancing her work and personal responsibilities. She was determined to do as much as she could before taking a short maternity break, and said she felt confident in putting the team into Coach Kaycee Westberry’s hands until her return.

On the subject of returning, the Jags bring back a total of six players from last year’s squad, including seniors Jamie Crowder, Melanie Reed, and Sonja Tweeten. The Jaguars also have their setter back, as sophomore Michaela Sifuentes continues to improve and emerge as a team leader on the floor.

While several faces will be familiar to Floresville fans, there are also a number of new players in varsity uniforms this season. Curran said her new team is “younger” than before, and has some things it has to work through.

“They are not used to each other yet,” she said. “We are doing a lot of team stuff this year. They need to learn how to talk, how to gel.”

Curran believes that in order for her team to have a successful season, they need to stay focused and continue working hard. She has four sophomores on varsity this season, but she said that they are there because they will “step up,” and because she believes that with a little time, they will be good.

The Jaguars will play in a new district this season, and will therefore have far less travel with which to contend. Curran said she did enjoy the teams they faced in district last year, but that she expects to meet up with them again in the playoffs. The district is also a little bigger this year, so the Jags will have some extra district games. Curran also decided to amp up the team’s non-district schedule a bit, as a way to help prepare them for the long district season.

Curran identified her team’s greatest strength as having great leadership in core positions, including her seniors at libero and in the middle. On the flip side of that coin, she said their greatest weakness is in the team’s overall youth. Curran said her less-experienced players will need to step up and brush off the mistakes they make.

“That will be key for us,” she said.

The Jaguars have already had a bit of an up-and-down season. The team started the year with a pair of losses to La Vernia and Navarro, but then came back to get a solid win over East Central. Floresville then participated in the Northside Tournament and struggled to find its way.

Overall, though, the team members and coaching staff are excited, and Curran hopes to continue improving and build upon the success the team had last season. Curran said her team needs to stay hungry for another playoff run, and to work hard at getting better every day.

The Jaguars will continue their non-district schedule until Friday, Sept. 7, when the team will begin district play at home against Medina Valley.
