Fall Sports Preview: Team results are the focus of fall tennis season

When it comes to high school tennis, the fall season is a time for “team tennis,” as wins and losses are measured by a team’s overall success, rather than by an individual performance. For the teams from East Central, Floresville, and La Vernia, it requires a different mindset than does the spring season, but all ultimately leads to making players better in the end.

In Floresville, Head Coach Mario Martinez said his team is working hard and “really making progress.” The Tiger and Jaguar team began the season with three match victories, defeating Southwest, Stevens, and Judson.

With 11 seniors on the roster, Martinez feels his team is “stacked” with good players, and the goal is nothing less than a team tennis district championship.

“I have been here for 10 years and we have never done it in that time,” Martinez said.

Uvalde is likely to be the team’s largest hurdle, but Martinez remains confident in his team, stating that everyone is working hard and not complaining.

“We want this to be our year,” he said.

Over at East Central, Coach Michael Lopez continues as the Hornet head coach, and his athletes have also been preparing for the team tennis season. Working out in the early evening, the athletes of East Central are becoming acclimated to the late summer heat, and their conditioning should help them in their matches.

Lopez was not available for comment and no roster was provided, but all of the athletes at East Central work hard to represent their school, and it appears certain the tennis team will do the same.

The third area team participating in team tennis is La Vernia -- sorta.

Head Coach Angie Hargreaves has done an excellent job with the La Vernia tennis program and has chosen to participate in the fall team tennis season, even though it is in an “unofficial” capacity. Unfortunately, for purposes of district alignments, playoffs, and championships, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) only recognizes Class 4A and 5A programs during the fall season.

That fact hasn’t slowed the Bears down, though, and La Vernia’s tennis team routinely dishes out losses to 4A and 5A schools.

Hargreaves has put together a full schedule for the Bears this fall, and while the team won’t compete for a district title or spot in the playoffs, many of the La Vernia tennis players are sure to reap the benefits of the fall season and to challenge for district supremacy in the spring.
