Town East Eagles blow out West Columbia, 50-0
The Town East Eagle six-man football team won its first game of the young season by trouncing West Columbia Charter School by a score of 50-0, ending the game at the half by virtue of the mercy rule.
The Eagles only have seven players this year, but that didn't matter, as they came out and played a great game on both sides of the ball. The Eagles held West Columbia without a first down on its first possession, and then took only two plays to find the end zone for the first time as Tyler Smith completed a 5-yard pass to Tim Muenzler for the first touchdown of the season.
The Eagle defense held West Columbia without a first down the entire first quarter, while scoring on every possession Town East had. The other scores of the quarter came on a touchdown run of 50 yards by Jacob Kemp, a 10-yard run by Dante Johnson, and another touchdown run by Johnson of 4 yards.
The second quarter saw West Columbia come out with a little more fire, and it was able to move the ball with a little more success. However, a couple of turnovers ended each of West Columbia’s first two drives of the quarter. Town East continued its scoring by Johnson going deep to Caleb Ceasor for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Smith then connected with Muenzler for a 15-yard pass for a touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff, West Columbia ran it back to the Town East 1-yard line, as Kemp made the touchdown-saving tackle. Town East was able to hold West Columbia out of the end zone on four consecutive plays, preserving the Eagles’ shutout. Town East went on to put up one more score of the half to end the game.
Overall, the Eagles played well. Head Coach Robert Davis said his players will need to get into better condition if they want to play and be competitive into the fourth quarter of games. With only seven players, it means these young men are playing both sides of the ball and also special teams, which doesn’t give them very much time to catch a breath.
Town East’s next game is this Friday night, Sept. 7, beginning at 7 p.m. The Eagles play their home games at Wiseman Field in La Vernia. Town East will face Christian School of San Antonio (CASA) this Friday. The team is coming off a season-opening loss of 54-6 to Seguin Lifegate.
