About politics and other things

Watching the Republican National Convention last week, the stark differences between the Republicans and the leader of the Democratic Party became apparent.

As Republican nominee Mitt Romney pointed out in his acceptance speech, after the last hard-fought election, we came together as we always have done after elections, even though Obama was “not the choice of our party.”

“Americans were eager to go back to work,” Romney said, “to live our lives the way Americans always have -- optimistic and positive and confident in the future.” He said we have an optimism that is “uniquely American,” and that is why so many of our ancestors came to America, often risking everything to do so. They came here, “not just in pursuit of the riches of this world, but for the richness of this life. ...” And for freedom: Freedom to act; to build; to speak.

Now, after four years, our hope and enthusiasm for our country’s new leader has given way to despair, as, “... for the first time, the majority of Americans now doubt that our children will have a better future.”

Listening to Romney, as well as to all the speakers addressing the convention, their life experiences came clearly into focus, providing a sharp contrast to Obama’s.

Suddenly it became clear. I understood the conclusions of the movie “2016: Obama’s America,” which attributes Obama’s Third World view to his upbringing, including the lack of a father figure and an absentee mother.

The first revelation came as Romney described his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan: “I love the way he lights up around his kids and how he’s not embarrassed to show the world how much he loves his mom.” That’s when it hit me.

These people all had, or still have, family relationships that Obama never had. While Obama shows a definite “longing,” perhaps, for his mother, the “love” is not apparent in his actions. (Except for the fact that he does seem to be a good father and husband.)

President Obama was deprived of those warm family connections and of the “work harder, sacrifice, and do without” that could have instilled in him a confidence of self. Instead, he looks to institutions to give him what the family did not.

He adopted a philosophy of wealth redistribution, and discourages that rugged American individualism that we have been famous for. The problem with wealth redistribution is that it discourages productivity, so that, eventually, you run out of wealth to redistribute, as Margaret Thatcher pointed out.

As Obama wrote in his book, Dreams From My Father, drugs helped him cope with lack of family: “I had learned not to care. I blew a few smoke rings, ... . Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. ..., [drugs were], something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory. ... You might just be bored, or alone. Everybody was welcome into the club of dissatisfaction.”

This election will be about change, but the change is in the direction that we want our country to go. Now that Americans have been absolved of much of their disgrace over slavery by electing their first black president, we can move on with making this country the great country that it once was, instead of trying to bring it down to the level of Third World countries.

Be Careful...highly partisan people are easily misled. It makes no difference to me if the goose is blue or red, they still squawk loudly when poked.

Your are correct, Rock'n. And, even worse, when Republicans DO talk about cuts and the Dems holler, the "cuts" are only CUTS IN THE RATE OF GROWTH ...

Both parties spend; they just spend on different things. The problem is, neither party seems able to figure out how to stop spending or pay back the debt. At least the Republicans talk about spending cuts, but usually when ... More ›
