EAGLE CREEK -- Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 2 has received a demand for payment from the Eagle Creek Volunteer Emergency Services (VES).

In a letter dated Aug. 16 to ESD No. 2 board President Keith Wildes, attorney William M. McKamie advises the Eagle Creek VES “... demands payment in the amount of $180,128.27” for “emergency medical and fire services rendered from the date of formation of the WCESD No. 2 to date... .” ESDs are funded by ad valorem taxes with a maximum rate of 10 cents per $100 of assessed value, to contract with agencies for fire and/or ambulance services. The county has two such districts; a third will be on the November ballot. See related article page 7A.

The letter gives the ESD until Friday, Sept. 21, to produce full payment.

As of the Aug. 6 ESD No. 2 board meeting, the district had yet to contract with any provider, either for ambulance or fire services (see “ESD No. 2 begins FY ’13 prep,” Aug. 15). Wildes said after the Aug. 6 meeting there were seven potential candidates to provide ambulance services. Proposals were due Aug. 22.

According to the guidelines for ESD operation, until the board contracts for services, no payments are made.

Wildes said Aug. 31 he had no comment regarding the letter.

“Our lawyer is looking into it,” he said.

The next ESD No. 2 meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, to discuss its coming fiscal year budget and tax rate.

Define numourous. You make it sound on the borderline of never. Does the term mutual aid mean anything to anyone?

The claim by "Reader" is not outlandish. I can say with certainty that there have been numerous times when the EC VES is unavailable to respond. "Huh?," it is obvious that you are the one who is uninformed.

I live in Bentwood - don't know who is suppose to cover my area. My husband lie dead for an hour and half (out in the sun) before an EMS person showed up. They finally got an ambulance out of Poth.

Dear uninformed reader, I am assuming that you have the data to support your outlandish claim. If you do, please post it up.

Demand all you want but remember that other EMS and Fire agencies have covered your area when your department either fire or ems don't respond to calls and that happens alot.
