LA VERNIA -- Tax revenue for the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) will be higher this year, after the district’s board of trustees approved the tax rate and budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year. The tax rate and budget for the coming year were the subjects of Aug. 27 public hearings and a special board meeting.

Board President Michael Jendrusch said the tax rate was lowered by one penny per $100 valuation from last year’s rate.

“Although we are lowering the tax rate, the amount of tax revenue received by the district will go up,” Jendrusch said. “It’s going to go up, due to the fact that the taxable values increased from last year to this year.”

La Vernia ISD’s new tax rate will be $1.395 per $100 of valuation, down from last year’s rate of $1.405. Of this amount, $1.04 is allocated to maintenance and operation; the remaining 35.5 cents will go toward debt service.

Taxable values in both the Wilson and Guadalupe county appraisal districts increased from $698,452,039 to $725,098,588, the trustees were told. Based on information from the Wilson County Appraisal District, the average taxable value of a home in the La Vernia ISD is $157,129. School taxes on such a property will be approximately $2,191.95. Last year’s bill on the average home, valued at $152,705, was $2,145.51.

The board also approved the budget for the coming fiscal year, to be supported by the new tax rate. The total expenditure budget is valued at $25,367,280, according to information presented to the trustees and posted on the district’s website after the Aug. 27 meeting. The budget, said Superintendent Tom Harvey after the meeting, “... is pretty trim, like it has been for several years.” Instruction takes the biggest bite from the total, at $11,966,133. Debt service accounts for almost $3.5 million.

The trustees recently approved a “pretty decent” technology purchase, Harvey said, which will be included in the new budget. The final dollar amount on the proposed technology expenditure hasn’t been determined yet; this will be brought to the trustees in September, he said.

“I have been here 12 years and this is one of the most exciting budgets, because of all we are able to do,” Jendrusch said. “Especially the technology, which is long overdue; in this type of economy, not many schools can say that.”

**In attendance: Superintendent Tom Harvey; Finance Director Laura Ramzinski; Board members Eric Friedrichs, David Watson, Janice Gimbel, John Bilicek, and Richard Schier; Board President Michael Jendrusch; Director of Technology Allen Bordelon; and superintendent’s Secretary Kristen Beavers.
