FLORESVILLE -- Residents living around Floresville may have noticed large trucks pulling up to fire hydrants recently to fill their tanks with water.

Floresville Constituent Liaison Sherry Pollok said these trucks belong to companies working in the Eagle Ford shale; they are buying city water.

“There are currently four or five companies who have an agreement with the city of Floresville to draw water from the hydrants,” Pollok said. “There is a $600 deposit that is required and from there the company is billed like any other customer. There is a meter on the hydrant, which tells us just how much water is being used.”

Water pressure always has been a controversial issue in the city, but Pollok said the hydrants being used will not jeopardize the water pressure in any vital areas of Floresville.

“The hydrants with the meters obviously aren’t going to be in an area like on [U.S.] 181 where it would affect local businesses,” Pollok said. “Overall, the use of these hydrants will bring in extra revenue for the city without having an impact on our water supply.”

Ms. Pollock, as Mr. Miller points out, anytime you open a hydrant in the system, it potentially will lower pressure across the system. Additionally, the avaliable water is a finite resource. When you take some out, you have less ... More ›
