FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) has paid the Floresville Independent School District (ISD) $200,000, making good on its promise to help fund the district’s early college initiative.

The FEDC agreed to pay $100,000 each year for three years. A first payment was made in 2009; however, the FEDC had failed to pay anything since then. The lack of payment was raised several times in FEDC and Floresville City Council meetings by citizens.

Dr. Jerry Hunkapiller, superintendent of the Floresville ISD, confirmed Aug. 30 that the payment took place the week before classes started Aug. 27.

“Everything has been taken care of that they promised several years ago,” he said.

A copy of a letter to Floresville ISD with the payment was provided to the Wilson County News by Floresville Constituent Liaison Sherry Pollok.

In the letter, FEDC Executive Director Jesse Perez states that the corporation “... made a commitment to participate in the creation of an early college and technological center in 2008 in a total amount of $300,000. On April 22, 2009, we made an initial $100,000 payment on our commitment. Please find the final payment of $200,000 enclosed... .”

In the know I find it in bad taste the way WCN put that in the paper ,instead of saying something good about the payment they choose to say in a negative way. Why is it a bad thing to give our local schools a 300,000 dollar gift? ... More ›
