CESTOHOWA -- An accident here has left several people injured, with six transported from the scene Aug. 31 after a Mexican band’s tour bus rolled onto its side near the intersection of S.H. 123 and F.M. 3191.
According to Sgt. J. Ryan Christian with the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, the band -- “El Recodo” -- was traveling south on S.H. 123, bound for McAllen. The bus moved off the roadway after a northbound 2011 Nissan Altima went into the bus’s lane and struck it. The bus went down an incline and rolled onto its side, Christian said.
The female driver of the car and two passengers from the bus were transported by ambulance to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy; three others were flown to University Hospital in San Antonio, Christian said.
The bus was carrying 19 people, including the driver. Witnesses to the accident broke the windshield of the bus to extract the driver.
Leading the investigation into the accident was Karnes County DPS Trooper Scott Jendrzey. Assisting him were Christian; Trooper Oscar Garcia of Goliad; Lt. Glen Garrett, based in Victoria; DPS Commercial Enforcement Trooper Tony Ramos, and other DPS personnel, including aircraft.
Also attending the scene were members of the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office, Karnes City Police Department, Karnes City Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), and emergency services crews from Karnes County, Stockdale, and La Vernia, as well as Texas Regional EMS.
At the same time, two rollover accidents were reported near La Vernia. No information was available on these as of press time Aug. 31.
DPS also investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident Aug. 30 on F.M. 775 near its intersection with F.M. 2772 near La Vernia.
Christian said Barbara Walsh, 41, of La Vernia was southbound on F.M. 775 when she moved off the right side of the roadway, hit a fence, and returned to the road for about 5 miles. She then lost control of her 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, moving eastbound off F.M. 775 and rolling the vehicle twice and rolling through a fence before it came to rest upright in a field.
She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, Ryan said.
Investigating the scene was Trooper Al Alejo, assisted by Troopers Anthony Flores and Cory Holmes. Also attending were members of the La Vernia EMS and the La Vernia Police Department.
